Sunset over Handa Island from Scourie, Sutherland, Scotland

Handa Island is situated in north west Sutherland in Scotland and lies 1/4 of a mile offshore and about 3 miles north-west of the town of Scourie on the mainland. The island has one of the largest seabird colonies in North West Europe and the wildlife is managed by the Scottish Wildlife Trust.

Handa has magnificent sea cliffs, formed from horizontally stratified Torridonian sandstone. They rise vertically from the Atlantic and each summer they come alive, when over 180,000 seabirds gather here to breed.

There is also attractive plant-life and archaeological remains of an old village which was inhabited by 8 families and 60 people until 1847, when during the great potato famine their crops failed.
